Montola Wind Orchestra celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011. The orchestra was founded by a local youth society in year 1911 in a small rural village called Montola, located close to Lappeenranta town, in the south-east of Finland. At that time a typical assemble was a traditional Finnish brass septet, and so was the one in Montola, too.
The set-up of the group has changed over the time and the assortment of instruments has expanded; nowadays there are about thirty players in the orchestra. Playing in Montola Wind Orchestra is a hobby for all the members. The players are either students or professionals working in different fields; there are teachers, doctor, nurse, radio journalist and also few musicians in our group, to mention but a few. The conductor of the orchestra is Inka Puhakka who has graduated as a conductor from the Sibelius Academy.
Montola Wind Orchestra gives concerts 2-4 times per year. It also performs to order about twenty times a year. The repertoire of the orchestra is extensive and versatile, comprising classic symphonic wind music, church music, music for children as well as easy listening and dancing music. This means that we can be ordered to play in very different kinds of occations!
Montola Wind Orchestra has visited and given concerts in various cities in Finland and abroad, for example in Sweden, Estonia, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Hungary. The latest trip was made to Berlin in May 2010 where the orchestra took part in the International Wind Orchestra Festival Berlin 2010, becoming awarded as a third best orchestra of the event.
Montola Wind Orchestra has made two own records, the latest one is Montola Avenue from year 2008. The CDs are available directly from the orchestra members or you may order them via montolan.puhallinorkesteri(at)gmail.com. The price of a CD is 20 € + shipping costs.
